Happy Mother’s Day from me to you

(Oscars 2014: Watch Jared Leto’s Amazing Acceptance Speech for Supporting Actor)

I’m about two months late, but I’ve been meaning to post this since the night I watched it. And it’s a happy coincidence, seeing as it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow, this is a wonderful dedication.

I first read about it on my social media feeds, then I went home to watch the video of Jared Leto accepting his award. I’m unabashed to say my eyes welled up when he looked at his mother.

Here’s an excerpt from Time.com:

In 1971, in Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high-school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her kids to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl was my mother and she’s here tonight. I just want to say ‘I love you mom, thank you for teaching me to dream.’

I got goosebumps just reading his speech again. One day when I’m up on stage accepting an award, I would want to also dedicate it to an amazing woman who went through hardships and made sacrifices just so I would always have a roof over my head and a home to go back when I grew disillusioned with life outside. She did everything and asked for nothing in return, all because I was her child. Mothers are amazing, aren’t they?

I also like how Leto weaved social responsibility and political support for current events into his short, yet meaningful, speech.

To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to to say we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen and live the impossible, we are thinking of you tonight … This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS. And to those of you who have ever felt injustice because of who you are and who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.

I wonder if he had to pre-write a draft or it came naturally to him amid all the blood-rushing-to-head adrenaline and excitement of winning the first Oscar of that night. If it was the latter, then he must be damn intelligent and thoughtful! I am definitely going to model my acceptance speeches after him from now so they can be as amazing, thoughtful and heartfelt as his!

Super dreamy Neal Caffrey

Ok, I am a week late to the news but for those of you who haven’t heard, the super good-looking Neal Caffrey from TV crime drama White Collar, aka Matt Bomer, is officially out of the closet. (Whee!) And the 34-year old actor is happy and comfortable talking about his husband and children in public. (Yay!)

Yes, this is news to me because I have never thought Caffrey was gay and yes, I have the biggest crush on him. I love his hair and his sartorial style on the show so much that I really REALLY want to look like him. Maybe that’s why my gaydar wasn’t working. I mean, look at this guy:

And look at that SOFT FLUFFY HAIR (and his chiselled jaws). How can anyone not want hair like that? I know I desperately do.

I just want to accentuate those soft curls again. Sigh.

Previously, Bomer was reticent about coming out. In a 2010 interview with Details magazine on his love life, Bomer said: “I don’t care about [rumours] at all. I’m completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life.”

Two years later when accepting an award for his activism against HIV/ AIDs at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards on Feb 13, he thanked his partner, Hollywood publicist Simon Halls, and their three children from the stage.

He said in his acceptance speech: “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry.

“Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

HOW FRICKING SWEET IS THAT? Guess he knows there’s nothing to hide.

Here is a photo of him and his doting partner (the typical older distinguished gentlemen sort, if you ask me):

Here are their three adorable kids:

What a happy beautiful family and they look so sweet together. Seeing happy couples makes me happy. We need more good-looking gay people like Bomer to come out and show the world it’s okay to love whomever you want and be happy together, no matter what society thinks. Your thoughts?

For he’s a jolly good hero

In the week where Jesus died and came back to life, I managed to crash the side of my dad’s car badly, lived through the guilt [sheepishly], celebrated his birthday* [awkwardly] and paid up for the car repairs with my savings from the last three months [painfully]. I was planning to use the money to go on a holiday which I badly needed since the start of the year so I will be having a staycation instead.

I sound totally stoked, I know and I’m also seriously considering the possibility of staying away from the Interweb during the staycation so I can concentrate on playing this game.

Being a pseudo rock ‘n’ roll hero surrounded by the adoring homely comforts such as the glossy Playstation 3, stacks of DVDs and the cushy bed. Can’t complain really. Not after you watch this video below.

*Never knew my dad had that many wild army stories stored away. Will definitely have to note it down in the next post.

Going to the movies

As I turned right going towards the direction of the cinema, the lovely sis stopped me. “Hey, that’s the wrong way.”

“You should be turning left.”

“Why? That’s the way to the market.”

“Yes and you are dressed for it.”

I’d have showed that smart mouth some knuckle popcorn if not for the miserable fact that we are related and I am really a non-violent sort when it comes to facing someone my own size.

How to [over]dress

So I was trying to put on an outfit for the day. Had a meeting to go to but wasn’t inclined to wear some formal gear since you know, it’s Friday, if you haven’t gotten the memo.  But I had to look at least businesslike, I think.

I put on a nice quality black tee, dead useful in looking slim, black jeans, nice grey belt (alright, it’s Ck if you want to know so badly), a black blazer, white shoes. With a black and white scarf. I sauntered over to my sister and struck a pose. “So what do you think?”

Pause as she gave me the critical fash-eye all over. “No.”

“What’s wrong?”

Weather forecast for Friday 9 January 2009: Sunny with no showers expected for the day. Temperature to remain around 30 to 32 degrees. Maybe you can carry an umbrella to ward off deadly sun rays.
